Farmhouse Family Day
Explore NYC’s oldest house! Enjoy scavenger hunts, artifact investigation, gardening, self-guided exploration, and hands-on activities!

Start the school year off at the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum for our Free Family Days and Farmers Market!

Drop-in between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for outdoor colonial games, seasonal activities, scavenger hunts and more! Join us in September as we tap into our inner creatives and cook up some natural dyes using plants found in everyday gardens. Starting at 1:00 p.m., we’ll explore the colorful ranges of plant-based dyes and experiment with creating patterns by twisting, folding, and wrapping our fabrics into different shapes. Visitors are invited to bring their own natural-based fabric scraps to experiment with. (Cotton and linen fabrics are best, as synthetic fabrics will not take dyes as easily.)

Explore inside the oldest house in New York City and tour the garden before stopping by the Farmers Market for organic Brooklyn grown produce.

Farmhouse Family Days are open to visitors of all ages and free to the public.

Workshop: Spinning and Felting
This workshop focuses on the process of cloth making from raw fleece and roving (cleaned, carded fleece) to yarn and felted fabrics.

Join us this summer at the Wyckoff Farmhouse for a spinning and felting workshop. This workshop is part of a series of six workshops for adults (and teens) in what we’re calling “creative homesteading”. Get your hands dirty in the garden, experiment with natural dyes, learn about herbal medicine, preserve your harvest, and more at the oldest house in New York!

This workshop focuses on the process of cloth making from raw fleece and roving (cleaned, carded fleece) to yarn and felted fabrics. We will be spinning—both with a drop spindle as well as with a spinning wheel. We will be felting—both needle felting and water felting. We will be creating beads, patches, paintings, and creatures. If you can imagine it, you can felt it! During the workshop there will be discussions of the methods used throughout the history of cloth making. Be prepared to leave this class with something wonderful that you’ve made.

Advance (free) registration is required. For more information and to register, please visit wyckoffmuseum.org/workshops.

That’s right! It’s not too late to start gardening. There are many vegetables and herbs that do well in cooler temperatures—kale, collards, spinach, lettuce, swiss chard, rosemary, and cilantro, to name a few. There are also other advantages besides having fresh produce after the summer—fewer pests to contend with, less watering required, and much less work, guaranteed. Come plan and plant with us, and take home a few transplants for your own garden.
