Historic New York: Willowbrook Park
Willowbrook Park is one of the most popular of Staten Island’s Greenbelt parks. Join the Rangers on a historic tour of Willowbrook Park and discover the park’s interesting past.
Meet the Urban Park Rangers near the comfort station at the park house.

Willowbrook Park is one of the most popular of Staten Island’s Greenbelt parks. Its combination of natural wilderness and recreational facilities draws a variety of visitors, particularly in the summer months.

The 164 acres of greenery offer a welcome contrast to the bustling neighborhood and traffic-lined streets that surround it. The Willowbrook area is mentioned in colonial records as early as 1683. Its many streams and waterways attracted early industrialists. By 1760, Willowbrook could boast of at least one sawmill and a number of factories producing metal tools.

A high school football coach finds himself fighting for stakes much higher than the State Championship in this drama based on actual events. In 1971, a court order forces three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia (two white, one African-American), to integrate their student bodies and faculties for the first time. As a result, Coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), longtime head coach of the T.C. Williams High School football team, is asked to step down, and Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is appointed to replace him as the school’s first black faculty member. The new coach is hardly welcomed with open arms, either by the school’s staff or the students, and the newly integrated team is full of players (both black and white) who have little trust or respect for one another. But Boone is determined to put a winning team on the field — it’s how he approaches the game, and his future depends on it. Against long odds, Boone helps his team overcome distrust and misunderstanding of their coach (and each other) as they become a gridiron force to be reckoned with.

Movies Under the Stars: Avengers: Age of Ultron
Iron Man creates Ultron to respond to threats that the Avengers aren’t able to handle. Unfortunately, Ultron believes that world peace can only be achieved by exterminating humanity.

Join NYC Parks and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for a free film.

This sequel to the smash-hit comic-book epic The Avengers finds the iconic superhero team dealing with a threat of their own making: a sentient robot called Ultron (voice of James Spader), who was originally designed as part of a peacekeeping program. Since the events of the last film, Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) have been working to take down various cells of a secret society of villains known as HYDRA. Their zeal to make the world a better, safer place inspires Tony Stark, genius billionaire and alter ego of Iron Man, to create Ultron in order to respond to additional threats that the Avengers aren’t able to handle. Ultron, unfortunately, takes this directive way too seriously; he believes that world peace can only be achieved by exterminating humanity, and he’ll stop at nothing to accomplish this goal. The battle between the Avengers and Ultron is further complicated by the appearance of superpowered siblings Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who ally themselves with the homicidal android. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders co-star as, respectively, S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Joss Whedon, writer and director of the previous Avengers movie, returns in both capacities here.
