National Moth Week Lecture and Light Trapping
Learn about moths and butterflies and why they are important to our environment.
Christine Johnson from the American Museum of Natural History will present a short lecture about moths and butterflies—what kind of insects they are, how they are different, why they are important, what plants they need to survive, and what we might find in the garden this night.
Then, we will set up a special light trap next to the native pollinator plant field, seeded over the past three years by donations from the Butterfly Project, to see what moths come to the light!
David Jakim from the Metropolitan Monarch Alliance will talk about monarchs and how to save them. There will also be caterpillars of the tobacco hornworm to see and touch! Take pictures and send them to National Moth Week Citizen Science to show them what moths we have in NYC!
Please note: The event is free and open to everyone of all ages but refreshments will be available at a low price.
