SummerStage Presents: Joe Bataan / Boogaloo Assassins / DJ Turmix
Joe Bataan, the “King of Latin Soul,†helped coin the phrase “Salsoul” in 1974 lending the name to his first album.
“
Joe Bataan, the “King of Latin Soul,” helped coin the phrase “Salsoul” in 1974 lending the name to his first album. Bataan was influenced by two musical styles: the Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop. Bataan recorded three albums and several singles for Salsoul Records and the Latin subdivision of Salsoul Records, Salsoul Leyendas. Titles include SalSoul, Rap-O-Clap-O, Joe Bataan II, Afrofilipino and a new compilation of his greatest hits titled Tropical Classics: Joe Bataan, which features the early 1979 hip-hop hit “Rap-O-Clap-O” and additional classic titles he performed for the Salsoul Leyendas label.
For the 11-piece Boogaloo Assassins the mission is simple: bring la gente a funky good time, Latin-soul style. Formed in Los Angeles in 2007, Boogaloo Assassins are the West Coast’s answer to New York City’s Latin music explosion of the late 1960s. Heavily indebted to the classic sounds of Spanish Harlem, Los Asesinos serve up their own late 1960’s-style salsa and “Latin Boogaloo”, best described as a raucous fusion of American R&B with Afro-Cuban rhythms, sung in both English and Spanish. Known throughout the West for their high-energy live shows, Boogaloo Assassins’ debut recording “Old Love Dies Hard” features their hit single “No No No”, a salsa version of the blues/reggae classic, featured on Gilles Peterson’s BBC-1, Los Angeles’s leading public radio station KCRW, and many others. As of Spring 2014, Boogaloo Assassins have hit both the road and the recording studio with new rock’n’roll phenom Nick Waterhouse.
NYC-based DJ Turmix is a Barcelona native who has been exciting music fans worldwide with his superb sessions for more than 20 years. He is vinyl collector and a specialist in 60’s musical styles, from Latin boogaloo, to latin soul and other afrocuban rhythms. Turmix has also been instrumental in the recent latin boogaloo revival in NYC, spinning his extraordinary parties and sets all over NYC, as a collaborator with the famed Fania Records.

SummerStage Presents: Lisette Melendez / Coro / George Lamond / hosted by Mick Benzo in association with Universal Zulu Nation and the 40th anniversary of Hip-Hop culture
Lisette Melendez is an American freestyle/Latin pop/dance-pop singer.
“
Lisette Melendez is an American freestyle/Latin pop/dance-pop singer. Her debut album Together Forever was propelled to gold status after her smash hits “Together Forever” and “A Day In My Life (Without You)” both sold over 700,000 copies in 1991. Both songs were such big dance music hits that they are credited as helping renew interest in Freestyle music in the early 90s, which had been fading in popularity due to the rise of mainstream pop music and grunge at the time. Melendez was born and raised in East Harlem. Melendez’ childhood inspirations include her mother and aunt, who sang in a church choir and community theater. As a teenager she honed her singing voice by emulating Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. In high school she became a fan of Puerto Rican freestyle music singer Lisa Lisa who had many dance hits. Melendez, also of Puerto Rican descent, was inspired by Lisa Lisa’s success. In 2008 Lisette teamed up with famed music producer Carlos “After Dark” Berrios and performed two new tracks “I Need a Lover” and “Don’t Ever Say” on albums Don’t Look Back Sessions One &Two.
Coro is a Latin freestyle singer and actor of Cuban and Dominican heritage, who first had roles in numerous episodes of the star’s hit television series, Miami Vice. While appearing on Vice, Coro struggled to put together a group to get his singing career off the ground. His first efforts never took off, but in 1987, Coro met Stevie B, who was enjoying the success of his first hit record and getting ready to tour. After a stint as a backup vocalist and dancer for Stevie B, the New York-born and Miami-raised Coro made the move back to his native Manhattan to initiate a solo singing career. Coro partnered with freestyle music producers Zahid Tariq and Todd Terry in 1989,. Coro’s first single, “Where Are You Tonight”, became the #1 dance record in New York and Florida. The song reached the Top 25 on Billboard ‘s club chart and put Coro on the road doing shows in dance clubs across the country. On his self-titled debut album, Coro collaborated with producers Zahid Tariq and Ziggy Gonzalez to create a selection of up-tempo dance tunes like “Can’t Let You Go”, “Where Are You tonight”, “My Fallen Angel” and ballads such as “Missing You”.
George Lamond began singing backup for various artists before landing a solo deal with Columbia Records. Lamond is known for his lyrical spinto tenor vocal quality, not found in most tenors of today. His first album, Bad of the Heart, released in 1990, had underground dance hits like “Bad of the Heart”, “Look Into My Eyes” and “Without You”. Lamond has also released a couple of salsa albums and scored a number of hits on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. 2001 saw the release of his highly acclaimed salsa album GL on Sony Records, and in 2006, Lamond returned with the release of his album Oye Mi Canto, bringing a new sound to his music career. The album was a combination of reggaeton, bachata and salsa, with seven songs produced by G1E Productions. In 2008, Lamond released a new single, “What is Love”, on an album titled Don’t Look Back – Session 2 produced by famed freestyle producer, Carlos “After Dark” Berrios, and a cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin”, released on Robbins Entertainment and produced by Giuseppe D. Lamond is featured on the Lucas Prata cover of Level 42’s “Something About You”, found on Prata’s Never Stop Dreamin’ album, also produced by Giuseppe D.
Mickey Bentson aka Mick Benzo owns and runs rap-oriented Pay Up Management. He was one of the founding members of the Zulu Nation, arguably the most important catalyst for hip hop. He has previously managed Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Everland and Big Punisher, and he now manages Ice-T and Fat Joe.

On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Our Night Hikes allow participants to see parks in a different light, and are great for families. Fitness Hikes feature less talking and more walking, for those who don’t mind a vigorous two hour hike. Learn how to navigate using a map and compass on our Orienteering programs. Special geo-cache programs teach you how to use a GPS while searching for hidden prizes.
Hiking and Orienteering programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). This is a light event. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

This animated adaptation of the hugely popular video-game series follows three avian friends as they put their anger to good use by fighting back against a hostile force. Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), and Bomb (Danny McBride) are all outcasts who don’t quite fit in on Bird Island, a community of flightless fowl who pride themselves on staying positive and cheerful at all times. The trio hit it off after meeting at an anger-management class, and are the only birds who seem even remotely suspicious when a group of green pigs arrive on their island. When the swine’s nefarious plans are revealed, only Red and his pals have what it takes to save the day.

The world’s least-employable heavy metal guitarist is entrusted with the minds of upstate New York’s best and brightest in this fish-out-of-water comedy. Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, axe-bearer for a fitfully successful bar band determined to win a regional battle-of-the-bands competition. There’s only one thing standing in their way: the self-indulgent solos and crowd-diving antics of their “embarrassing” lead guitarist. When his band votes him out in favor of a would-be rock god, Dewey has to make the rent somehow, and after intercepting a call for his substitute-teacher roomie Ned (Mike White), the pot-bellied slacker finds himself in front of a class of elite elementary school students. At a loss for a lesson plan, Dewey takes offense at the pre-teen prodigies’ staid musical regimen and makes it his goal to preach them the gospel of The Who, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC — with the ulterior motive of getting them to compete against his former band for a cash prize. But no matter how willing his pupils, Dewey runs up against the consternation of the school’s stern headmistress Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack), the battle-of-the-bands’ promoter (Frank Whaley), and not least, his identity-deprived roomie Ned.
