SummerStage Dance: The Francesca Harper Project and World Jazz Master Class
Francesca Harper blends original choreography, dance, music and film to create groundbreaking works that are category-defying.

7:00 PM – All Levels Open Dance Master Class by: Cecilia Marta

8:00 PM – Performances

Francesca Harper blends original choreography, dance, music and film to create groundbreaking works that are category-defying. Harper has performed in several Broadway productions including: Fosse, The Producers, The Frogs, and The Color Purple. The Oakland Tribune says “Harper, who has the physique of a modern goddess, had the audience on the edge of its seats.” She has choreographed works for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Tanz Graz, and her own company The Francesca Harper Project, which aspires to create a unique style – classical dance forms, deconstructed and fused with cutting-edge text, music, and film. The content of the pieces are rooted in her most fundamental themes: creation, imperfection, love, humanity, race, sexuality, politics, and identity. The Francesca Harper Project embraces and celebrates the spirit of diversity and individuality.

Conceived, choreographed and directed by Francesca Harper, Modo Fusion: Art Prototype is an hour-long exploration through the world of beauty pageants, using a surreal blend of original dance, music, film and narration.

Master Class: Come join Cecilia Marta in discovering the richness of World Jazz and embody it’s instinctual rhythms and sensual organic flow.

SummerStage and Valerie Gladstone Present: Dance Off the Grid / Master Class: Evidence
SummerStage and Valerie Gladstone present Dance Off the Grid

“Dance Off the Grid” (OTG) is the latest iteration of the Museum of Arts and Design “Dance Under the Influence” hailed as a must-see “eclectic performance series” by The New Yorker, and curated by arts writer, Valerie Gladstone. Fresh from a successful season at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck, OTG features the top talent of contemporary dance, ranging from modern to hip hop, salsa to Indian dance in performances as engrossing to newcomers to dance as to seasoned fans.

Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY focuses on the fusion of African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. This work provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of African forms and rhythms. Evidence tours to some 30 communities in the United States annually. It has traveled to Cuba, Brazil, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Hawaii, Ireland, Holland, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, and in 2010 joined the U.S. State Department’s DanceMotion USA tour to perform, teach master classes and conduct demonstrations. Evidence brings arts, education and cultural/historical connections to communities that have historically lacked these experiences. Annually, the company reaches and audience of more than 30,000.Join them as they perform Come Ye, a piece inspired by the music and sociopolitical legacies of artists/activists Nina Simone and Fela Kuti. This multimedia work utilizes Mr. Brown’s signature style of kinetic storytelling through African, Caribbean, modern, ballet and social dance styles to summon warriors, angels and activists dedicated to the pursuit of liberation and peace amidst the strug- gles of human conflict. This work includes music by Nina Simone (“Come Ye,” “Sunday in Savannah,” and “Revolution”) and Fela Kuti (“Kalakuta” and “Coffin for Head of State”) and a video collage by Robert Penn.

Mac DeMarco built by meanred

Mac Demarco, a 21-year old Canadian, released his debut album, Rock and Roll Night Club (RNRNC), just a short while ago in the spring of 2012. This album was accompanied by a barrage of bizarrely funny promo videos, wildly unhinged live performances and a not-so-subtle disparate range of promo photos. More recently, Demarco released his second album, 2. As opposed to RNRNC, 2 is a concerted effort to produce a cohesive work that showcases Mac’s natural ability as a songwriter, singer and producer. Pitchfork reviewed 2 saying how Demarco “writes about life– both the heavy moments and the mundane ones– with economy and newfound grace.” Demarco appreciates the work he does and it’s obvious he is presenting himself musically in the most sincere way possible, no matter what happens in his wild videos or live shows.

SummerStage Presents: The New York Neo-Futurists Present Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind
The New York Neo-Futurists are an ensemble of dynamic writer/director/performers who are best known for their critically acclaimed show, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.

The New York Neo-Futurists are an ensemble of dynamic writer/director/performers who are best known for their critically acclaimed, energetic signature show of original short plays, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. Once called “The Snapchat of Theater”, with its ever-changing “menu” of plays, TML is a race against the clock to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes in an order determined by the audience! All our plays are presented from a perspective of absolute honesty, do not ask the audience to “suspend their disbelief”, and often include audience interactions. A non-illusory collage of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental, Too Much Light endeavors to tell dynamic stories while embracing chance, change, and chaos. Developed out of a format that has been a success in Chicago since 1988, the Neo-Futurists put down roots in NYC in the mid 90’s and have been growing strong ever since. After a grand re-birth in the city in 2004, NYNF has created over 3300 new plays for Too Much Light, as well as many longer form works, and continues to present award-winning, topical and vital work every weekend at the Kraine Theater and around the New York independent theater community. Sometimes true life really is stranger than fiction…
