Inwood Lecture Series: Lost Inwood on the Back Porch
Learn about how Inwood’s streets got their names and when they were built.

Lost Inwood on the Back Porch is taking it to the streets. The history of Inwood’s streets, that is. We’ll learn about how Inwood’s streets got their names and when they were built. Who exactly were this pair of Seaman and Cumming, anyway? We’ll view magnificent, exquisitely detailed photos of street-building in Inwood at the turn of the last century and get ourselves ready for next month’s eagerly anticipated visit by Manhattan Borough Historian Michael Miscione.

Country in the City
Enjoy the arrival of warm weather by joining us for our annual Open House at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.

Where else can you sit on a porch in Manhattan? Enjoy the arrival of warm weather by joining us for our annual Open House at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. A special feature of the day in the “country” will be local artists working in the plein-air (in the open air) tradition of landscape painting in the garden.

Events During the Day:

Artists at Work

11am-4pm

In the late 19th and early 20th century, artists came to Inwood to capture its remaining rural character on canvas. Local artists Andrea Cukier, Diane Drescher, Elissa Gore, Tony Serio and Marc Solomon continue that plein-air tradition and will spend the day finding inspiration at the farmhouse.

On the Farm

11am-5pm

Take a self-guided tour of the farmhouse and learn more about the Dyckman family and what living in the country meant in early 19th century New York.

This week’s Lost Inwood On the Back Porch will be a program illustrating how Inwood has been portrayed on maps over the past four hundred years.

Making use of beautiful high-definition projections, we’ll sample works of early explorers from the 1600s, soldiers from the 1700s, city surveyors and land speculators from the 1800s, archaeologists of the early 1900s, and even contemporary works.

We’ll also see the Inwood Time Machine, our animation overlay process which enables the viewer to literally fly above Inwood as the centuries pass. Hold on to your hats!

We’ll have the opportunity to peruse two of the rarest and most beautiful maps ever made of our neighborhood; a sampling of Randel’s 1819 Farm survey plates and the magnificent Historical Map of Inwood by Reginald Pelham Bolton. Made in 1906 and never published, Bolton’s multilayered magnum opus has rarely been seen.
