Movies Under the Stars: ‘Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth’ and ‘Stop Making Sense’
Celebrate the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist and composer, Bernie Worrell at this festive party and movie screening.
Join NYC Parks, New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the Black Rock Coalition for this tribute to iconic musician Bernie Worrell!
Before AfroPunk, there was Funk and Bernie Worrell! Celebrate the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist and composer, Bernie Worrell at this festive party featuring music by DJ Logic and the films “Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth” and Jonathan Demme’s “Stop Making Sense”. “Stranger” documents Bernie Worrell’s life and musical contributions including “Flashlight”, “Atomic Dog”, “Stop Making Sense”, among others. The documentary features concert footage and interviews with Yasin Bey (Mos Def), Will Calhoun (Living Colour) and David Byrne (Talking Heads).
This film is followed by “Stop Making Sense”. Considered one of the best concert movies of all time. The movie features the ’80s rock band Talking Heads and Bernie Worrell. Filmed at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in 1983, Demme captures the frantic energy and artsy groove while deconstructing the excess of ’80s pop culture.
