Hack the Rock: Rockaway Civic Hack Day
Join Rockaway Help for a community workshop designing web-based tools for emergency preparedness and response.
The VW Dome 2, presented by MoMA, is a temporary structure located at the Beach 94th Street parking lot.
“
Rockaway Help will be hosting a community workshop at the MoMA VW Dome to brainstorm around what web based tools and apps they wished existed for emergency preparedness and response. This will be a hands-on session where participants will be sketching, talking and thinking through design and coastal living problems and work to see if we can collaboratively come up with concrete solutions through technology.
We need community leaders to help us figure out what kinds of problems we had before and after Sandy – problems that we can solve using technology. Once we identify the problems, our hacking teams will work with community members to build the solutions.

Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.
About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the ’60s and introduced Taiko worldwide).

Before entering art school, Rick Kane sets out to surf the big wave season on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, after winning a surfing contest in an Arizona wave pool by his home. Once in Hawaii, he immediately finds out that he knows nothing about the local habits, customs, or pecking order which cause him some starting problems. After being robbed by the local surf gang, he has a chance meeting with famous surfboard shaper Chandler, and after figuring out they have an artistic connection, Chandler offers Rick a place to sleep and something to eat. Chandler teaches him how to “read” the big waves and the difference between “soul surfers” and those who surf for fame and money. He also manages to get the attention of a beautiful young native, which further stirs the pot with the “locals” but in the end gives him the courage and determination to take what he has learned from Chandler and surf the big waves like he had dreamed he could.
