Shadow Performance by Cave Dogs: Sure-Minded Uncertainties
Cave Dogs will perform Sure-minded Uncertainties, which explores how immigration and the interplay of materialism, spiritualism, technology, and stewardship of the earth shapes our modern world.

On the occasion of their collaboration with Juanli Carrion’s public artwork OSS#02, the shadow performance group Cave Dogs will perform “Sure-Minded Uncertainties”, which explores how immigration and the interplay of materialism, spiritualism, technology, and stewardship of the earth shapes our modern world.

A range of fantastical characters acting as modern day archetypes navigate a series of transformations through five short stories interweaving their fundamentally similar, but often out of place worlds. The work, when viewed in its entirety, forms a collective narrative that addresses mankind’s complicated relationship to each other, nature, and its resources. “Sure-Minded Uncertainties” uses innovative, visual effects and an original soundtrack to create a rich experience that documents and preserves important cultural voices and stories.

Cave Dogs brings together visual artists, puppeteers, musicians, dancers, storytellers, and writers in the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration. Their medium evolves out of two ancient traditions: shadow puppet theatre and storytelling—and several contemporary art forms including film, video, sound, computer-generated animation, and performance art to create multiple, richly-layered visual tableaus, and produce effects that conjure both the dreamlike quality of early experimental film and the humor of contemporary animation.

We invite the audience to both de-construct these shadowy illusions while they are caught up in the intriguing layers of effects.

HeartSeat Beats: Public Art Becomes Musical for Make Music New York
The public artwork HeartSeat by Stereotank at Fort Greene Park will be outfitted with drums, pipes, and xylophone keys from its original installation in Times Square.

HeartBeat comes back to life in Fort Greene Park for Make Music New York!

Join Stereotank + Neil Nisbet + Diego Rioja for a jam session at the Fort Greene Park. HeartSeat will be geared with drums, pipes and xylophone keys: custom-built musical instruments from the original installation HeartBeat.

HeartSeat is a striking red sculptural seat fabricated from a repurposed water tank. This work was originally commissioned for the juried Times Square Valentine Heart Design Competition. In its original orientation, the work was a participatory installation in the form of a massive heart glowing to the rhythm of a strong, deep and low frequency heartbeat sound and visitors were encouraged to move around and engage with it by playing various percussion instruments. Now, the once united heart is split in half in order to form innovative public seating.

Stereotank is founded by architects Marcelo Ertorteguy and Sara Valente, and is dedicated towards creating a fusion between architecture, music, design and environmental science with their public art projects.

This exhibition was originally commissioned by the Times Square Alliance and The Architectural League of New York. This event is presented by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership.

Join NYC Parks for the opening of Tanda Francis’ public art installation Adorn Me in Fort Greene Park.

Tanda Francis’ work examines the African presence in public space as a powerful force of beauty and cultural relevance. Inspired by African sculptural tradition, including Ife portraiture, Francis also incorporates Victorian and colonial ornamentation into her work. Adorn Me will address the underrepresentation of this demographic in public artworks, and provide a healing message during a time of heated debate over monuments erected as symbols of oppression and control.

This exhibition was made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant.

Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant
Introduced in September 2016, the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant builds on Parks’ equity initiatives by bringing regular public art exhibits to parks that have historically lacked cultural programming. The $200,000 grant has been issued to a total of 20 artists over the course of two consecutive years, with $100,000 distributed to 10 artists in 2017, and $100,000 issued to another 10 artists this year. Each chosen artist receives $10,000 to execute their pieces. The first round of winning artists installed their pieces in June 2017, and each was on display for one year

This event is free and open to the public.

OSS is a geopolitical garden in the shape of Brooklyn that features 36 different plants chosen by immigrants living in the borough. Placed according to the interviewees’ physical locations within Brooklyn, the plants represent the immigrants, their communities, and the diversity of the borough. Participants will tend to the garden plants, learn about plant origins and care, and discuss how the installation addresses issues of immigration.

Join us at an opening reception for artist Juanli Carrion’s public art installation OSS#02 Brooklyn in Fort Greene Park.

Join us at an opening reception for artist Juanli Carrion’s public art installation OSS#02 Brooklyn in Fort Greene Park. Remarks will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the park entrance at Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park, followed by light refreshments in the Fort Greene Park Visitors Center.

OSS (Outer Seed Shadow) is a series of public art interventions in the form of geopolitical gardens that represent the union between plants and human interaction. Carrión revisits the enduring idea of the American “melting pot” and investigates the new realities of immigrant life in present-day New York, the most symbolic of immigrant cities. The threefold public art installation, community garden, and educational center for community discussion derives from a series of videotaped, at-home interviews conducted by Carrión with immigrants living in Brooklyn. The interviewees are asked about their personal experiences with cultural adaptation and coexistence since arriving in New York. At the end of the discussion, each interviewee selects a plant that exists in both their country of origin and the United States to be planted in the garden. The survival of the garden is dependent on its free public programs that include weekly hands-on gardening workshops organized in partnership with local organizations and institutions. For the complete schedule of programming, visit outerseedshadow.org.

OSS#02 is presented in partnership with NYC Parks. It is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), The Fort Greene Park Conservancy, and Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. BIG Reuse and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are additional collaborators on this project.

This event is free and open to the public.

With a scorching original music score composed by noted writer/arranger Erik Talbert, Hands to the Sky documents the outdoor soulful house music scene and its origins.

Join NYC Parks and New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for this free film!

With a scorching original music score composed by noted writer/arranger Erik Talbert, Hands to the Sky documents the outdoor soulful house music scene and its origins. Over a two-year period, the directors, Jean-Paul Noel & Angelo Boyke, followed this music out of the clubs and house parties and into the parks and beaches where an estimated 100,000 house music fans gather to dance, commune and rejoice in the summer heat. From Coney Island to Fort Greene Park to various public spaces in and around New York City, Hands to the Sky interviews dancers, event promoters, deejays and performers who share personal, often poignant anecdotes and recollections of how house music in general, and these outdoor functions specifically, have shaped their worldviews, established lasting relationships and inspired dreams and aspirations.

CityParks PuppetMobile Presents Puss in Boots
Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

The PuppetMobile will be placed by the Visitor Center at the top of the hill. Please bring a blanket and/or chairs to watch the performance.

Urban Park Rangers specialize in interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and man-made, in our city’s long history. Historic New York programs highlight the history of selected neighborhoods or parks. Fort Greene’s history is rife with important names: Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Greene, Frederick Law Olmsted, Calvert Vaux, William Howard Taft, and McKim, Mead and White, to name a few, which hint at the important role the park has played in the city’s history.

Public Art Opening: ‘One Map of Many Moments’ by artist Amanda Patenaude
One Map of Many Moments, the newly-completed glass mosaic map of the park, highlights park users’ favorite places, activities, and elements of the park.

In partnership with Fort Greene Park Conservancy, Fort Greene artist Amanda Patenaude turned park trash into community treasure. One Map of Many Moments, the newly-completed glass mosaic map of the park, celebrates volunteerism and stewardship, and highlights park users’ favorite places, activities, and elements of the park.

One Map of Many Moments is located just southwest of the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument on a marble plinth that once held a plaque from King Juan Carlos I of Spain.

The piece will be on display from July 1, 2017 through May 2018.

For almost three years, NYC Parks and Fort Greene Park Conservancy worked together with the help of hundreds of volunteers to pick up glass shards found around the park. Originating from a time when the park fell into disrepair, the glass pieces, some dating as far back as the 1930s, emerge from the park’s eroded slopes after heavy rains. Through community effort, an unsightly hazard was transformed into public art. As much a work of art as it is a work of volunteerism, the mosaic draws on the creativity and collaboration of neighbors and residents who submitted drawings for the individual fragments. According to Patenaude, “This work of art has been a catalyst to investigate issues of waste and reuse, new forms of community building and our evolving role as patrons of this beautiful park.”

Julius Caesar at Fort Greene Park
In this sensational political thriller, Shakespeare explores the tension between private loyalties and the public good, and unflinchingly questions the price of freedom.

Watch Hip to Hip Theatre Company’s production of Julius Caesar at the Myrtle Avenue Lawn in Fort Greene Park.

This family-friendly production is for lovers of Shakespeare and for those experiencing Shakespeare for the first time. All performances are free and open to the public. Bring picnic blankets or low chairs. No lines. No tickets. Seating is first-come, first-served. Stop by an hour before the show for an interactive, kids’ friendly workshop.

Kids & the Classics
6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
“Kids & the Classics” is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of “Free Shakespeare in the Park”. This free 45-minute, interactive workshop is offered one hour before every performance, and is designed for children ages four to 14. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games, and close reading of text.

Julius Caesar
7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
In this sensational political thriller, Shakespeare explores the tension between private loyalties and the public good, and unflinchingly questions the price of freedom. Caesar is determined to crown himself as Rome’s first emperor, but a few senators, led by the idealistic, intellectual Brutus and his manipulative, rebellious friend Cassius, are prepared to sacrifice everything to liberate their country. Instead of being greeted as liberators, they are met with civil war.

Join the Rangers and learn how to make your own primitive tools. This program is recommended for ages 8 years and older.
