Force MDs / Horace Brown / Jeff Redd / Marley Marl / hosted by Bob Lee in association with WBLS
New York born and bred, The Force MDs began their climb to fame by singing and dancing on Greenwich Village street corners and the Staten Island ferry.

New York born and bred, The Force MDs began their climb to fame by singing and dancing on Greenwich Village street corners and the Staten Island ferry. Among the first R&B vocal groups to intermix catchy Doo-Wop affected consonances with Hip-Hop beats, the Force MDs versatile mix of credible urban savvy with smooth showbiz pleases both B-Boys and traditional Soul fans.

R&B sensation Horace Brown made his first break in 1991 after Jodeci’s DeVante Swing discovered one of his impressive demos. He reached popular success in 1996 after the release of his debut self titled album, which featured a number of well known artists including Sean “Puffy” Combs and Faith Evans, and included the hit single “One for the Money.” Today, this R&B veteran continues to write and perform, displaying his remarkable musical skills to all.

With a clear vision and passion for music and performing, Jeff Redd has had a long, successful musical career. As a winner of GRAMMY, American Music, Soul Train and Billboard Awards, Redd has worked as both a performer and in the production field. Known for jumpstarting Mary J. Blige’s career, Redd now has his own independent record label. His song, “You Called and Told Me” is still considered to be a top single in the R&B world. With various other projects under his belt, including a long list of soundtracks and albums, Redd’s music has always, and continues to inspire.

One of Hip-Hop’s first super-producers, Marley Marl was an early innovator in the art of sampling, that resulted in some of the sharpest beats and hooks during rap’s Golden Age. As the founder of Cold Chillin’ Records, Marl assembled a roster filled with some of the finest Hip-Hop talent in New York during the 1980s. His production work for those and many other artists boasted a bright, booming, and robust sound that helped move street-level Hip-Hop’s into more mainstream territory. His production credits span Hip-Hop royalty including, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Capone-N-Noreaga, and Fat Joe.

“Doctor” Bob Lee is one of the most recognized entertainment personalities in New York, with his career in radio, music and television spanning over 30 years. You can hear Lee on WBLS at midnight every Sunday through Thursday as he spins today’s R&B and Classical Soul hits until 5 A.M, and on air every day with his “Daily Dose” series tackling health issues which affect the community.

At the intersection of music and technology, Derrick “D-Nice” Jones has built a career as a respected musician, photographer, and web-developer.

At the intersection of music and technology, Derrick “D-Nice” Jones has built a career as a respected musician, photographer, and web-developer. D-Nice grew up in the Bronx, Hip-Hop’s birthplace, and emerged as a rapper and producer in the late 1980s. DJ Scott La Rock of Boogie Down Productions mentored D-Nice as a teenager and offered him a place to develop his talent alongside rap legend, KRS-One. He began to expand into production, producing The Stop The Violence Movement’s number 1 single “Self Destruction,” and later working with Queen Latifah and Kid Rock on their early albums. Among his many musical projects he also contributed to the soundtrack for the film, “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.” DJ D-Nice has performed at events with/alongside Stevie Wonder, Diplo, , Santigold, Big Sean, Drake, Trey Songz, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Will Smith, Billy Joel, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Prince, Queen Latifah, Russell Simmons, Wiz Khalifa and many more.

Twenty-five years ago Keenan Ivory Wayans unleashed I’m Gonna Got You Sucka on the world and a comedic classic was born in this parody of blaxploitation movies, wherein a black hero wannabe reunites former black heroes from the 70s, to help him get revenge on Mr. Big. Written, directed and starring Keenen Ivory Wayans, I’m Gonna Got You Sucka features noteworthy Black actors from the blaxploitation era including Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, and Isaac Hayes. Chris Rock, Kadeem Hardison, Ja’net Dubois, John Witherspoon, Damon Wayans and Clarence Williams III, are also featured. Join us for a fun-filled tribute to a wayward classic.

SummerStage: The Chi-Lites
At the forefront of the 70s R&B Chicago scene, The Chi-Lites put Chicago on the R&B map.

SummerStage is the largest free performing arts festival in New York City. To celebrate its 30th season, SummerStage is showcasing nearly 200 unique artists.

The Chi-Lites
At the forefront of the 70s R&B Chicago scene, The Chi-Lites broke away from the gritty sound associated with the Windy City by creating their very own – smooth and distinct – which put Chicago on the R&B map, and brought the band a string of top ten hits, gold singles, and gold albums. During the 70s, the group released 11 Top Ten R&B singles which ranged from smooth ballads to socially conscious protest songs. In 2000, The Chi-Lites were inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and in 2003, the group was featured in the documentary, Only The Strong Survive, released by Miramax. Their song, “Are You My Woman,” is sampled and featured in the GRAMMY award winning Beyoncé track “Crazy In Love” featuring Jay-Z. The rapper also featured The Chi-Lites’ “That’s How Long I Love You” in his song “December 4,” which hit #1 on Billboard.

Das EFX / Special Ed / Chubb Rock / Black Sheep / Marley Marl / hosted by Bob Lee in association with WBLS
Black Sheep is a Hip-Hop duo from Queens, New York, composed of Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean.

Consisting of Skoob and Krazy Drayzy, Das EFX has been around the music game for a long time. The duo gained critical and commercial fame with the release of their landmark debut album, Dead Serious, which highlighted their unusual rapping style which they nicknamed “sewage”. Dead Serious went platinum and its lead single, “They Want EFX,” reached the top ten on Billboard Magazine’s R&B chart, the top 40 on its Hot 100 Singles chart and #1 on its Hot Rap Tracks chart. Das EFX returned in 1998 with the album Generation EFX and followed up in 2003 with the album How We Do. The duo is currently working on a new album.

Special Ed‘s talent to throw out line after line of flowing lyrics with a rapid-fire delivery got him his big break after impressing the respected Hip-Hop producer Howie Tee. Hailing from Brooklyn, Ed used his neighborhood landscape to inspire some of his lyrics as he described the sights and sounds of his Flatbush neighborhood. His debut album, Youngest in Charge was on the Billboard charts for 38 weeks and featured, “I’m the Magnificent” and “I Got it Made,” which achieved “classic” status in the Hip-Hop community.

Chubb Rock, often compared to a Hip-Hop Barry White, dropped out of pre-med at Brown University to pursue his musical career. Regarded as one of the East Coast’s most dexterous rappers, he first appeared on the national Rap scene with his self-titled debut, Chubb Rock. His 1991 release, The One, reached #13 on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart that year. Three singles from that release made it to #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Single chart that same year including, the classic song, “Treat Em Right,” “Just the Two of Us” and “Lost in the Storm.”

Black Sheep is a Hip-Hop duo from New York, composed of Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean. The group was an affiliate of the Native Tongues collective, a group of Hip-Hop artists known for their positive-minded, good natured Afro-centric lyrics, and for pioneering the use of eclectic sampling and later Jazz-influenced beats. Black Sheep debuted in 1991 with the hit song “Flavor of the Month” and later released its first album, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, which generated the classic “The Choice is Yours” and gained them praise and recognition in the Hip-Hop community for the album’s unique rhythms and intelligent lyrics.

SummerStage Presents: J. Holiday / Jon B in association with WBLS
Laid-back Washington, D.C.-based R&B vocalist J. Holiday brings an unexpected edge to R&B music.

Laid-back Washington, D.C.-based R&B vocalist J. Holiday brings an unexpected edge to R&B music. He bears a street sensibility and bravado normally reserved for hip-hop but remains inspired by groups such as Boyz II Men and Jodeci. His first release, the hit single “Be with Me” was the prelude to the full-length debut album, Back of My Lac’ . The album became a major success due to singles like “Bed” and “Suffocate,” both of which topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Holiday’s second album, the more romantic Round 2, shows audiences a softer side with tracks that are reminiscent of early 70’s soul.

Jon B is an accomplished musician, noted songwriter and producer who combined 1970s Soul with Hip-Hop influences in his debut album, Bonafide. A soulful album that highlighted his dulcet tenor, it earned him both critical and commercial success, especially with the GRAMMY nominated song “Someone to Love” featuring Babyface. Jon B’s success continued with his platinum album Cool Relax, fueled by the success of “They Don’t Know,” which topped the R&B charts. In the album Stronger Everyday, Jon experimented with sounds and textures to accompany his vocals that gave his music a deeper, mature vibe. Hopeless Romantic, showcased his songwriting skills, featuring the single “Ooh So Sexy” with Paul Wall. In 2011, Jon B released Comfortable Swagg, which celebrates his journey as a family man.

Ismael Miranda aka “El niño bonito de la Salsa” (The pretty boy of Salsa) always wanted to be a musician, and by age 11 had already formed two groups.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

Ismael Miranda aka “El niño bonito de la Salsa” (The pretty boy of Salsa) always wanted to be a musician, and by age 11 had already formed two groups, “The 4J’s and Little Junior” and “The Class Mates”. He sang and played conga for the group and they were good enough to appear on Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Miranda also grew up and played in his first bands with Jazz percussionist Orlando “Q” Rodríguez and piano player Mark Diamond. In 1967, when Miranda was 17 years old, he made his recording debut and made such an impression on bandleader Larry Harlow, that he was hired as Larry’s lead singer. He later joined the Fania All Stars and went with this band on tour to Europe, Asia and Latin America. In 1973, he formed his own band called “Orquesta Revelación” and recorded “Así se compone un son” under the Fania record label. With this song, Miranda entered the new salsa craze which was sweeping the nation and was then baptized as “El Niño Bonito de la Salsa” ( ‘The Pretty Boy of Salsa”). He went on to launch his own record label “IM Records” and continues to perform nationally to this day.
