Public Art Opening: Dionisio Cortes Ortega’s Sitting Together

Join NYC Parks for the opening of Dionisio Cortes Ortega’s public art installation Sitting Together in Joyce Kilmer Park.

Inspired by the neighboring Bronx Supreme Courthouse, Sitting Together critiques the established proceedings of courtroom cases. The sculptures will place the plaintiff and defendant within modified witness stands to encourage empathy and understanding, and redefine how we think of conflict resolution. Color and seating direction in each sculpture address the severity of the conflicts.

This exhibition was made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant.

Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant
Introduced in September 2016, the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant builds on Parks’ equity initiatives by bringing regular public art exhibits to parks that have historically lacked cultural programming. The $200,000 grant has been issued to a total of 20 artists over the course of two consecutive years, with $100,000 distributed to 10 artists in 2017, and $100,000 issued to another 10 artists this year. Each chosen artist receives $10,000 to execute their pieces. The first round of winning artists installed their pieces in June 2017, and each was on display for one year

This event is free and open to the public.

Join us for an afternoon of music & portraits at Joyce Kilmer Park.

The Bronx Photo League will be taking free portraits of the community while we enjoy the melodies of traditional songs. Come and meet Trevon Blondet, the photographer who created this wonderful piece of art.

This piano is a compilation of images that documents and celebrates the workers and trades people of Jerome Avenue, one of New York City’s few remaining working class neighborhoods where many still make a living in small shops and factories, or repairing auto-mobiles.

Sing For Hope Pianos

For two weeks in June, they bring stunningly painted pianos – each a unique piece of art created by a different artist – to New York City’s parks, streets, and public spaces for anyone and everyone to play. The Sing for Hope Pianos inspire community engagement.

Public Art Opening: Patricia Cazorla and Nancy Saleme Press Launch in Joyce Kilmer Park
Join NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, UNIQLO, and the artists to celebrate the opening of the public artwork Flying High for Equality in Joyce Kilmer Park.

Join NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, UNIQLO Global Director of Corporate Social Responsibility Jean Shein, and the UNIQLO grantee artists to celebrate the new Art in Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant. In addition to the celebration of the public artwork there will also be a musical performance.

Inspired by American novelist Richard Bach’s bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Patricia Cazorla and Nancy Saleme’s Flying High for Equality uses oversized, colorful sculptures of the city’s sparrows as a metaphor for the search for equality. Sparrows are creatures of resilience, audacity, intelligence, and beauty that mirror many of the qualities of New York City’s communities.

This exhibition is made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.
