THE GIRLS IN THE BAND tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents. Directed by Judy Chaikin. (In case of rain we move the screening indoors) Feel free to bring blankets or chairs to enjoy the outdoor screening.

Probably the oddest, most off-the-wall cult film ever made, this kinky rock’n’roll science fiction horror satire is everybody’s favorite midnight show. A young couple stumbles into a castle inhabited by weirdos from the planet Transylvania including Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) a transvestite Frankenstein in rhinestone heels. A marvelous musical spoof which urges, “Give yourself over to absolute pleasure.”

Join us at Lyons Recreation Center for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Volunteers will be painting and cleaning up the center after it sustained damage by Hurricane Sandy. Registration is required to participate in the service project. For additional information or to register, please click here.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. In April 2009, Mayor Bloomberg launched NYC Service, the citywide initiative tasked with setting a new standard for how cities can tap the power of their people to tackle their most pressing challenges. This year, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Mayor’s Office and City Agencies will be coordinating service projects in the communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. NYC Parks will be participating in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by offering volunteer projects around the five boroughs, including Lyons Recreation Center.
