Hudson Yards. The Vessel.

Hudson Yards is a large-scale real estate development on the West Side of Manhattan, and its centerpiece is the iconic, honeycomb-like structure known as The Vessel.

About The Vessel
  • Design: Designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, The Vessel is an elaborate, 150-foot tall structure made of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs and 80 landings. It was created to be an interactive sculpture that visitors could climb to get unique views of the city, the Hudson River, and the Hudson Yards Public Square.
Current Status and Reopening

The Vessel has had a complex history since its opening in 2019. It was closed indefinitely in 2021 after a series of tragic incidents. However, following the installation of new floor-to-ceiling steel mesh safety barriers, it has since reopened to the public in October 2024.

  • Admission: A general admission ticket to The Vessel is required and costs around $10, though NYC residents can enter for free.
  • Hours: The Vessel is open daily, typically from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Important Note: Due to the new safety measures, the top level of The Vessel remains closed to the public, and only the lower levels with the new steel mesh barriers are accessible.
Other Attractions at Hudson Yards

Beyond The Vessel, Hudson Yards offers a variety of other attractions:

  • The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards: A large, upscale shopping mall with a wide range of luxury retailers and dining options.
  • Edge: The highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the city from over 1,100 feet in the air.
  • The Shed: A new center for artistic invention that hosts a variety of performances, art shows, and events.
  • The High Line: The elevated public park that runs from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards, offering a unique and scenic walk.
  • Public Square and Gardens: The public area surrounding The Vessel that features beautiful gardens, public art, and seasonal events.
