An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.

Know Before You Go
You should arrive before 8:00 p.m. to get your spot. Feel free to bring a blanket to sit on, although there will be a limited supply of chairs available. Bottled waters are OK, but no glass. Reservations are not taken; space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. All are welcome!

Opening Weekend: River Rising/Sube el Rio Exhibition
The Bronx River Art Center invites the community to come out to Starlight Park for the opening of the outdoor exhibition River Rising/Sube el Rio.
Enter at 177th and Devoe Ave

The Bronx River Art Center invites the community to come out to Starlight Park for the opening of the outdoor exhibition River Rising/Sube el Rio: An Exposition of Science, Art and Technology. BRAC will present eight large-scale public art sculptures in the newly renovated Starlight Park that the community will be able to interact with and enjoy as modern pavillions. The sculptures artistically recreate the 1918 Bronx International Exposition of Science, Arts and Industries.

This fun weekend of parades, music, dancing, live performance, and more recreation will reimagine the vibrant outdoor space of the 1918 Fair’s art and business focus and celebrate the rejuvenated Bronx River and redesigned Starlight Park .

June 30, 12-10pm

11am: Stephen Paul DeVillo’s leads a historical tour of Starlight Park.

12pm: Mind-Builder’s New Orleans’s Style Second Line Opening Parade

7pm: Moonlight Dancing to Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates Troubadours

12pm: Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre and friends, followed by another day of art, science, and entrepreneurial activities

Join the Bronx River Alliance in celebration of their new River House! There will be food, performances, and more!

Join the River House Celebration at Starlight Park!

Boogie on the Bronx River with live music by Consumata, dance performance by Angela’s Pulse, sports and games, community paddles, and more at this fun and FREE family-friendly event.

Schedule of Activities

2:00 p.m. – 5K Canoe Challenge: Teams will compete in a canoe relay course (five legs) for a total distance of 5K
2:30 p.m. – Dance Performance: Angela’s Pulse creates and produces collaborative performance work dedicated to building community and illuminating bold, new stories.
3:15 p.m. – 5K Canoe Award Ceremony and River House Announcement: Find out who will be the “2017 Bronx River Canoe Champion” and we have news about the “Greenest Building in the South Bronx”.
4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – River House Hard Hat Tours: First-come, first-served, tours are every half hour. Please note: you will be entering a construction site and for your own safety please wear closed-toed shoes and no sleeveless shirts or short skirts. You will be provided a hard hat that you must wear at all times.
4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – Community Paddle: Short canoe trips for beginners and families. First come, first served. Our paddle is also part of the Waterfront Alliance’s annual “City of Water Day” celebrate your Bronx River waterfront with us!
7:00 p.m. – Consumata: [KON-SU-MAH-TAH] band will make you dance Cumbia-punk, ska-funk, boss-a-rengue, dubbed out tarantellas!
8:00 p.m. – Movie night featuring Moana: Don’t forget to bring your blankets and enjoy a movie about an adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people.

Workshop description: Learn the fundamentals of playing and exploring with watercolors from NYC artist, Daniel Colon. Daniel shares his process of selecting the proper paints and brushes to capture the beautiful colors and details of summer leaves. The information provided in this class will help you learn how to apply watercolor and create basic shapes using fun, easy techniques. All levels of skill are welcome; no previous drawingor painting experience is required. Bio: Daniel Colon is a multi-talented visual artist and illustrator. His mastery of traditional mediums lend his workan incredible sense of quality and craft, capable of conveying a wide array of visual concepts. His multimedia projects emphasize observation, interpretation and visual thinking skills. Daniel studied at The Art Students League and Hunter College and is a recipient of the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Grant. This event is FREE for adults interested in learning this technique. Amazing Bronx River Flotilla & 5K Canoe Challenge
Come cheer on the racers and enjoy an afternoon of free music, canoe trips, learn-to-ride bicycle clinics and more.

Come open our paddling season with a modified Flotilla featuring paddling opportunities for every age and skill level. Gather up a fundraising team for our 2nd annual Starlight 5K Canoe Challenge to raise vital funds for Bronx youth and families to enjoy paddling adventures this summer (some paddling experience necessary).

All can come cheer on the racers and enjoy an afternoon of free music, canoe trips, learn-to-ride bicycle clinics, Bronx River Ramble tours, NYC Parks Play & Fitness Mobile ZUMBA and much more!

The Amazing Flotilla
Join us for a unique Bronx River Flotilla, complete with a first-ever canoe race on the Bronx River, free community paddling and more

“Join us for a unique Bronx River Flotilla, complete with a first-ever canoe race on the Bronx River, free community paddling and guided trips of the estuary. This event will also be a celebration of our newest park on the Bronx River Greenway: Starlight Park.

Registration for the Starlight 5k Canoe Challenge is now open. Help us raise vital funds to make canoeing on the river available to over 1,000 youth and their families this season. Help us reach our $20,000 goal by signing up to participate today! You’ll have a ton of fun while supporting a great cause.

We can only accommodate 10 teams, so pull together your family, friends and colleagues and register today! You’ll challenge yourself, have a great time, and provide vital support to enable hundreds of kids to discover the Bronx River this year.

Full schedule of the day’s events:

  • 11:00 – 12:45: Starlight 5k Canoe Challenge

  • 12:45 – 1:30: Award Ceremony & Starlight Park Celebration

  • 1:30 – 3:45: Music, art, fishing demonstrations, free bike loan-outs, and public paddling, including free short community paddles, intermediate paddles to Concrete Plant Park, and a round-trip paddle to the Soundview Salt Marsh Restoration Project (you must register for the Restoration Tour below. Tickets available April 10, 2013)

Paddled the Flotilla before? Please note that this year’s event will be different. Construction of a fish passage will be underway at the southernmost dam on the river at 182nd St, marking the latest milestone in the restoration of the river. While we celebrate this progress, it means that a full river paddle is not possible. Besides the team canoe challenge, there will be plenty of opportunities to get out on the river at the 2013 Flotilla!
