Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary, the park presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Outdoor Cinema: Alice / Czech Republic
Now celebrating its 17th year, the festival features open-air cinema, music, dance, and food, held in the 5-acre waterfront park in Long Island City, Queens. Admission is free.

Pre-screening performances begin at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Film Forum and Socrates Sculpture Park are pleased to announce the 2015 programming for the park’s Outdoor Cinema film festival: eight weeks of international movies shown under the stars on Wednesday evenings from July 1 – August 19. The series is presented by Socrates and Film Forum, in collaboration with Rooftop Films. Now celebrating its 17th year, the festival features open-air cinema, music, dance, and food, held in the 5-acre waterfront park in Long Island City, Queens. Admission is free.

“I cannot explain myself, I’m afraid, sir” said Alice, “because I’m not myself you see.” – Lewis Carroll. His Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. No one has done justice to the infinitely creepy quality of Carroll’s fantasy of childhood disorientation better than master Czech animator Jan Svankmajer. A live-action Alice encounters both animated animals (the White Rabbit looking like a taxidermist’s nightmare) and objects (have knee socks ever been so scary?) on her trip down the existential rabbit hole.

Please note: This movie is not recommended for young children.

1988, 84 minutes. Directed by Jan Svankmajer.

Programmed by Film Forum.

TV Premieres Under the Stars: The Blacklist
The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and NYC Parks announce free outdoor screenings of “Made in NY” television show premieres, including NBC’s The Blacklist! Part of the “Movie Under the Stars” series.

The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and NYC Parks announce free outdoor screenings of “Made in NY” television shows at select parks in New York City, offering a sneak peek of the shows before they air on television. This is a unique opportunity to connect New Yorkers to major network shows that are filmed in their communities in a creative setting. NBC’s hit series The Blacklist will be screened on Friday, September 25.

In the third season of the hit NBC drama The Blacklist, FBI Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone, “Law & Order: LA”) is now a fugitive and on the run with criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader, “The Office,” “Boston Legal”). With Assistant FBI Director Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix “The Matrix,” “Ray”) under investigation, a conflicted Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff, “Homeland”) leads the FBI Task Force on a massive manhunt for Liz and Red – who are more dangerous together than apart, since Liz has expert knowledge of FBI procedures and no one exceeds Red’s vast resources. As they struggle to stay one step ahead of their former colleagues, and Liz immerses herself in Red’s underworld of disreputable contacts and covert operations, will the list of this season’s new Blacklisters play a key role in their survival or their demise? Liz is on an unpredictable journey of self-discovery, and all the pieces of her life, including her indefinable relationship with Tom (Ryan Eggold, “90210,” “Lucky Them”), will be drastically challenged as she continues to believe Red holds all the answers. The season three premiere episode of The Blacklist airs on NBC on Thursday, October 1 at 9 p.m.

Please bring your own picnic blanket or chair; space is available on a first come first served basis. For additional information about the free outdoor screening, please call (718) 730-7970.
