Nueva Bronx: 21st Century Families Community Sharing
Photographer David Flores shares the culmination of six weeks of portrait photography in Railroad Park with the community at large.
At 161st Street and Courtlandt Avenue
Photographer David Flores shares the culmination of six weeks of portrait photography in Railroad Park with the community at large. Nueva Bronx: 21st Century Families aims to show that family, in all of its beautiful forms, stands as a cornerstone of the human experience, creating intersections between past, present, and future while simultaneously weaving larger connections in the community.
Parents, children, elders, extended family and friends are all encouraged to participate in the making of formal images and leave with a large format print of themselves, free of charge. Also enjoy a taste of world dances and explore a fusion of cultures in a dynamic workshop led by renown dancer Lisa Green. Participants are challenged to build a routine with elements from Africa, the Caribbean, and Bronx-born Hip Hop.
Flores’ project is his response to recent nationalist movements that have attempted to remove and erase familial representations of immigrants, promoting a racist, xenophobic and criminalized gaze on new comers to the United States. Nueva Bronx: 21st Century Families pushes back against this flawed lens by celebrating and promoting the image of families.
The art sharing will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The dance workshop will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This ArtBuilt residency includes community partners The Bronx Defenders, WHEDco, and The DreamYard Project.
This free event is open to all ages.
