Arts, Culture & Fun: City Birds by Elana Amity
“City Birds” includes numerous paintings and monotypes of birds found in New York City’s parks, sidewalks, and window sills.

Visit Poe Park Visitor Center for our new exhibit City Birds by Elana Amity. The exhibit will be on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center on Tuedays through Saturdays from March 4 through March 29. There will be an opening reception with a Q&A session on Saturday, March 11.

About City Birds
Raised in the Bronx, Elana Amity visited Poe Park numerous times. As a young child she roamed in and around the cottage, and as a teenager she and her friends danced while a band played in the gazebo. Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” was brought to life by her father who loved reciting poetry. Ironically, Poe completed his final revision of “The Raven” while living on 85 Amity Street, now West Third Street, in New York’s Greenwich Village. Amity’s current work includes numerous paintings and monotypes of birds found in New York City’s parks, sidewalks, and window sills. Her birch bark paintings reflect images and textures found in natural settings. Her illustrated poems include the works of Wallace Steven, Edgar Allan Poe, William Wordsworth, and Wilfred Owen.

Artist Bio
New York City artist, Elana Amity, began her career as a teacher and freelance illustrator. She served on the board of the Society of Illustrators for many years. In 1984 she joined the faculty of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where she taught illustration, painting and drawing. In 2010 she opened a studio in Manhattan’s Garment District. Her paintings, drawings and prints capture both fleeting and enduring moments oflife in cities, nature and beyond. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces at home and abroad.

Capturing the Bronx Exhibition
The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, point of view, and a personal story.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Join us at the opening of our Youth Art Festival! Meet the artists and participate in fun activities, including arts and crafts and a photo booth!

For the first time, Poe Park Visitor Center is highlighting artwork created by NYC Parks youth through an art festival. This three-week art festival will include a variety of artwork created, from September of 2016 through April of 2017, by children who attend NYC Parks youth programming at recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.

Artist and Recreation Specialist Laura Alvarez created monthly curriculums, which were implemented by the recreation team throughout the year. Each lesson plan was based on a famous artist’s work, allowing for cohesion in the exhibit, while also allowing the children to use various styles of art in their own work.

About Poe Park Visitor Center
The Poe Park Visitor Center, a gallery space in the Bronx, offers free dynamic arts and cultural programming from theatrical performances and
concerts to fitness classes and recreational activities. The center hosts rotating art exhibitions, and welcomes visual, literary, and performance
artists from around the city to present workshops to the public.

Jamie Visits the Harbor: The Watercolors of Michael Mendel
Check out “The Watercolors of Michael Mendel”, inspired by the artist’s and son’s visit to the New York Harbor together in 1972.

“I can’t believe that it has taken me 46 years to complete this challenging exhibit. A project that I never dreamt could possibly fulfill such an exciting promise, let alone take as long as it has! It started out innocently enough in the winter of 1972, on an early Sunday morning drive in and around New York City’s fabled waterfront, accompanied by my then 4-year-old son James, plus an old Ciroflex camera and a few rolls of black and white film. I remember how fascinated the little fellow was by the sights, smells, and texture of the area. Since this visit occurred on a Sunday, all was quiet on the waterfront. There were, anchored right next to him, tugboats, cargo ships, ocean liners and U.S. naval vessels to name just a few of the more impressive sights. And then, I must not forget to make mention of the spectacular view from the Staten Island Ferry, of the Twin Towers looming proudly in the distance. Since that time many things have changed in and around the harbor. However, the nostalgia of that visit still dwells within and has been captured by me in this series of stunning watercolors executed over a period of years, with diminutive James (“Jamie”) as poignant model.” – Michael Mendel

Poe is the Raven Exhibition
Based on both fact and fiction, “Poe is the Raven” gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe while residing in the Bronx.

Ray Felix presents a dark, yet whimsical tale based on the life of Edgar Allen Poe while residing in the Bronx. Based on both fact and fiction, “Poe is the Raven” gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by his visits to Poe Cottage, Ray Felix became intrigued by spiritual ether surrounding the Poe property and the stories told by the long time
tour guide of the Poe cottage. Felix’s imprint “Bronx Heroes,” takes stories from American History and transforms them into super heroes. Felix believes this allows Bronxites to appreciate everyday heroes from Bronx history and gain a greater understanding of their borough’s historically rich past.

Inspired by historical homes, including those in the Bronx, Cara Lynch’s exhibition of prints and installations is a window into the world of intricate patterns from past centuries. House Work explores Lynch’s concern and interest in feminine identity and the home, much like the domestic craft work created by 18th and 19th century housewives. Going beyond simple ornamentation, her intensely hand-worked woodcuts clearly illustrate her belief in the purification of self through meditative labor—quietly expressing frustration, instability and obsession through intricate or repeating patterns influence by historic textiles, window dressings, and wallpaper.NYC Parks is pleased to announce the exhibition House Work, a series of prints and installations by Cara Lynch on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center through October 5, 2013. Inspired by historical homes, including those in the Bronx, this hsow is a window into the world of intricate patterns from past centuries and goes beyond simple ornamentatin.
