Travers Park34th Ave. & 78th St. Queens, 11372
Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnival gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.
The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

2015 Annual Summer Street Theater Tour: Teach It Right, or Right to Teach
Theater for the New City’s award-winning “Teach It Right, or, Right to Teach” is a rip-roaring musical which tackles the challenges and struggles facing public education in NYC.
Theater for the New City’s award-winning Street Theater Company opened its 39th annual tour with “Teach It Right, or, Right to Teach,” a rip-roaring musical which tackles the challenges and struggles facing public education in NYC.
Free performances will tour city streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs through September 20. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks.
The production tells the story of a NYC middle school student who is about to enter high school. His school often has no heat in winter, is broiling hot in summer, has no art classes, and a charter school is about to grab half its building.
The student, Michael, deprived of an afterschool program, tries for a part-time job at McDonald’s, where he is caught up in a melee when someone bucks the line. Knocked unconscious, he is rescued by an undocumented worker, but dreams an Odyssey through the beggar/transient underground, where the king of the panhandlers is organizing an underground to fight the Real Estate Cartel, headed by B.M. Peabody. The Cartel wants to purge the City of anyone living at or near the poverty line in order to obtain a contract for the 2022 Olympics. Michael is sent to spy on the cartel, but is captured and imprisoned in the Glitter Clutter Club in the sub-basement of Trump Towers.
Meanwhile, Michael’s teacher, R.C. Brown, is searching for him. He has suffered, like Michael, at the middle school, enduring budget cuts, teaching to the test, and spending his own money for supplies. He, too, is kidnapped by the Cartel to keep him from finding Michael but is rescued by the daughter of the King of Panhandlers. Michael and R.C. Brown, both now entering high school as student and teacher, are reunited to face the battles of NYC schools, where disputes over privatization reflect the challenges and struggles of the world outside. They will be leaders in the fight to teach it right and for the right to teach.

Join NYC Parks, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Councilmember Daniel Dromm (NYC District 25) and NewFest for a free film celebrating the LGBTQ+ community!
A moving and intimate portrait of courage under fire, WOMAN ON FIRE captures the extraordinary life and journey of NYC’s first transgender firefighter. For Brooke Guinan, fighting fires runs in her blood – both her father and grandfather served in the FDNY. But as a transgender woman, her path to service has not been without obstacles. Earlier this year, Brooke gained more visibility when she was selected as grand marshal in NYC Pride, and she continues to be a marvelous role model and pioneer for LGBTQ rights. Come out to the park and experience Brooke’s powerful story alongside the community within the borough of Queens where she serves. Directed by Julie Sokolow.
Presented and programmed by NewFest: New York’s LGBT Film & Media Arts Organization.
